Adhesives 101: Things Packaging Designers Must Know
The adhesive technology has travelled afar and become one of the most innovative revolutions. After all, it offers packaging designers the opportunity for great designs that are both functional and eye-catching. The right adhesives help create safe, easy-to-use packaging (when it’s your wish) while ensuring the product stands out. Here are the types of adhesives one should know:
The Basics of the Types of Adhesives -
Packaging designers understand that a variety of adhesive innovations on the market might become pretty overwhelming. Furthermore, not each adhesive is ideal for all applications, and a few are more versatile than others. So, all in all, the adhesive types listed below get employed in the packaging applications from labelling to cartons:
- PSAs or Pressure sensitive adhesives can hold two materials via contact &physical pressure. It acts as a permanently tacky bond and allows users to separate two materials. All in all, it’s best for sealing plastic, metal, paper, wood, glass, and other substrates. And most notably, it’s a prominent choice for labelling food packaging as well as bookbinding.
- It’s known as the “gummy glue” or “credit card glue.” This particular adhesive differs from the pressure-sensitive adhesive as it offers a temporary bond. And packaging designers use fugitive glues for marketing applications
- Now comes the EVA adhesives. These are generally applied with commercial hot melt gun’s use. And they are solid at room temperature until they get heated up &melted. Such glues are ideal in a myriad of packaging applications as they offer a speedy set time. They also offer a long shelf life &functionality around many different temperatures. Since these adhesives adhere to paper, waxes, aqueous coating, and stock, they are a preferred choice for packaging applications.
- Like EVA, the Metallocenehot melt adhesives are dispensed through the hot melt gun. As a result, they are solid until applied. Different people prefer metallocenerather than EVA as they have little negligible odor and are extremely clean-burning. In addition, these packaging adhesives are known for bringing minimal stringing.
Now that packaging designers are familiar with the adhesive types, they know which ones to use and when.
